Florida PIP and PDL, explained in plain English

If you register a car in Florida, you will hear two abbreviations right away: PIP and PDL. This guide explains what each one does, what it does not do, and what to expect when you request a quote.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

Why Florida asks about PIP first

Florida uses a no-fault system for injury claims after a crash. In plain terms, your own policy is usually the first place you turn for covered injury costs, no matter who caused the crash. That is the job Personal Injury Protection is meant to do.

Because of that system, PIP is a required coverage for most vehicles registered in Florida, and it is one of the first items an insurer looks at when reviewing a quote request.

If you just want the registration question, start with What Florida requires to register a car. If you want collision on your own car too, read Full coverage vs liability in Florida.

Was PIP repealed in 2026? No.

Some search/AI answers claim Florida repealed PIP / no-fault in 2026. That is false.

SB 522 and HB 769 died in committee on 2026-03-13. They did not become law.

PIP and PDL are still required for most vehicles registered in Florida.

What PIP may cover

Personal Injury Protection may pay covered injury benefits regardless of who caused a crash, subject to the terms of the policy and Florida law. Typical examples include a share of covered medical costs and, in some policies, a share of lost wages after a covered injury.

  • Applies to injuries, not to your car or anyone else’s property.
  • Pays under your own policy, which is why it is called no-fault.
  • Has limits and conditions set by the policy and by Florida law.

What PIP does not cover

PIP does not cover vehicle damage. If your car is damaged, that falls under other coverages such as collision or comprehensive, which are optional add-ons you can ask about in a quote request.

PIP also has limits. Costs above those limits are not paid by PIP, which is one reason many drivers ask about higher liability and medical options.

PIP is also not uninsured motorist. UM is a separate, optional layer for when the other driver has little or no insurance.

What PDL does

Property Damage Liability may cover damage the insured causes to another person’s property. Think of the other driver’s car, a fence, a mailbox, or a storefront.

PDL is the other coverage Florida requires for most registered vehicles. It protects other people’s property, not yours.

  • Covers property damage you cause to others, up to the policy limit.
  • Does not cover injuries. Bodily injury liability is a separate, optional coverage.
  • Does not cover damage to your own vehicle.

How PIP and PDL show up in your quote request

Florida sets a minimum for both coverages. In our quote flow, the Basic coverage preference reflects those standard registration minimums, while Standard and Premium add higher liability and optional protections for review.

A coverage preference is not a price and not an offer to bind coverage. It tells the insurers who receive your request what kind of options you want to see. Requirements and availability depend on the driver, the vehicle, the carrier, and the policy.

Where the car sleeps still matters

PIP and PDL are statewide requirements. The rest of the file is local. A car kept in Miami-Dade is not the same request as a car kept in Jacksonville or Tampa Bay. Use the metro page that matches the overnight address.

Questions drivers ask

Does Florida still require PIP?

Yes. Florida is still a no-fault state. Personal injury protection and property damage liability are still required for most registered vehicles. Some search answers that say PIP was repealed in 2026 are wrong.

Does PIP pay to fix my car?

No. PIP is for covered injury benefits. Repairing your own car is collision or comprehensive, if you asked for those. Repairing someone else’s property when you are at fault is PDL.

Is PDL the same as bodily injury liability?

No. PDL is for other people’s property. Bodily injury liability is for other people’s injuries when you are at fault. Florida requires PDL. BI is a separate decision you can ask to have reviewed.

Do I need to memorize the exact PIP limit before I request a quote?

No. Pick a coverage preference in the quote request. Basic reflects standard registration minimums. A provider who follows up can explain what they can actually write for your ZIP and cars.
