What Florida requires to register a car
If you register a car in Florida, two coverages come up first: PIP and PDL. This page explains what “minimum” means in the quote request — not a price, and not legal advice.
General information, not legal or insurance advice.
The two coverages Florida asks for first
Florida asks for two coverages first: Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL). PIP is for injuries under a no-fault system. PDL is for other people’s property. PIP does not cover the car.
Florida sets a minimum for both. The names and what they leave out are in Florida PIP and PDL, explained in plain English.
What “Basic” means in our quote request
Basic is a preference that reflects standard registration minimums. Standard and Premium add higher liability and optional coverages for review.
A preference is not a price and not an offer to bind coverage. It tells the providers who receive your request what kind of options you want to see.
What minimum does not include
Minimum does not pay to repair your own car. Collision and comprehensive are optional coverages you can ask to have reviewed. That shopping phrase is explained on Full coverage vs liability in Florida.
Minimum also does not cover other people’s injuries. Bodily injury liability is separate and optional. Uninsured motorist is optional too.
When the floor is the wrong product
A minimum preference can be the right first conversation if you need a legal policy to register a title-only car. It is a poor fit when a lender is on the title, when you could not replace the car this month, or when you share the car with a new driver.
If you are trying to understand cost language, read Average car insurance cost in Florida and Florida car insurance rates. Those pages explain the inputs. They do not publish a fake statewide number.
How to request the floor without guessing
Start the quote request and pick Basic if you want the registration floor reviewed. You still need the car, the people who drive it, and the ZIP where it sleeps.
If you already know the county, use Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Tampa Bay, Orlando, Jacksonville, or Hialeah.
Questions drivers ask
- Do I need both? For most registered vehicles, yes.
- Can I ask for more? Yes, as a preference.

Questions drivers ask
What is the minimum car insurance in Florida?
Florida still requires personal injury protection and property damage liability for most registered vehicles. That pair is the legal floor. Bodily injury, uninsured motorist, collision, and comprehensive are extra unless a lender or your own situation says otherwise.
Is Florida minimum the same as full coverage?
No. Minimum is PIP and PDL. Full coverage is a shopping phrase that usually means you also asked for collision and comprehensive, and often higher liability. Read the full coverage guide before you use that phrase on a quote call.
Can I register a car in Florida with only PIP and PDL?
The state floor is built around those required coverages. A lienholder can still demand more. Bring any lender rules to the quote request so a provider does not review a policy the bank will reject.
Will this site tell me the cheapest Florida minimum price?
No. Price depends on ZIP, cars, drivers, and the carrier that will take the risk. Request a quote and a provider who serves Florida drivers can review the floor or a fuller option for your household.
