Florida uninsured motorist coverage

Florida still requires PIP and PDL to register a car. Uninsured motorist is a different coverage. It is about you when the other driver has no insurance, or not enough.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

What UM is for

Uninsured motorist (and the underinsured form that often sits next to it) is coverage you buy for your household. If another driver causes a crash and they have no liability — or their limit is used up — UM is the part of your policy that may respond for you.

It is not the same as PIP. PIP is no-fault medical and related benefits on your side. UM is about the other driver’s missing liability. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

UM is not the registration minimum

You can register a car in Florida without UM. That is why people skip it and later wish they had asked. The minimum guide is the floor. UM is a conversation on top of that floor.

A lender who wants collision still is not asking for UM. Physical damage and uninsured motorist solve different problems. Full coverage vs liability keeps those labels from blending.

How it sits next to bodily injury

Bodily injury liability is what you buy so other people can collect from you. UM is what you buy so your household has a path when the other person cannot pay. They are paired in conversation and they are not the same line on the declarations.

A provider can review both on one quote request. Say you want UM and BI looked at, even if you are starting from a minimum policy.

What to send when you ask

Bring the current declarations if you have them. If a prior carrier already listed a UM rejection, say so. If you are new to the state, read Just moved to Florida? so the garaging address and the old policy are in the same request.

We will not print a dollar table here. Limits are a file-specific choice. The quote is where those numbers get reviewed.

Questions drivers ask

Is uninsured motorist required in Florida?

No. PIP and PDL are the registration floor. UM is optional. Many households still ask to have it reviewed because Florida has a lot of uninsured drivers.

Is UM the same as PIP?

No. PIP is no-fault coverage on your policy. UM is for when the other driver has no insurance or not enough. Ask for both to be explained on the quote.

Should I reject UM to save money?

That is a household decision, not a site recommendation. Ask a provider to show the file with UM and without it. Do not reject it just to make a thinner quote look cheaper.

Does full coverage include uninsured motorist?

Not automatically. Full coverage usually means collision and comprehensive on top of liability. UM is its own line. Read it on the declarations.

Ready when you are

Request your Florida car insurance quote

Request a quote and ask for uninsured motorist to be reviewed with the rest of the stack. It is not the Florida floor — it is still worth a look.

Submitting information is a request for a quote, not an application for or guarantee of coverage.
