Florida bodily injury liability
Florida’s registration floor is PIP and property-damage liability. Bodily injury liability is the coverage that responds when someone else is hurt and you are at fault. A lot of drivers skip it because the state lets them.
General information, not legal or insurance advice.
What BI is for
Bodily injury liability is coverage you buy for other people. If you cause a crash and they have medical bills or a claim against you, BI is the part of the policy that may pay those damages, up to the limit on the declarations.
It is not PIP. PIP is no-fault on your side. It is not PDL, which is about the other car’s property. Mixing those three words is how people think they already bought BI when they only bought the floor.
Required to drive vs required to register
You can register a car in Florida without BI. That does not mean a lawsuit cannot find you. It means the DMV packet can close on PIP and PDL. If you want BI reviewed, you have to ask.
Some households add it the first time they see a quote that is only the floor. Some add it after a near miss. Either way, the quote request is where a provider looks at the stack next to uninsured motorist.
How it sits next to “full coverage”
People say full coverage when they mean collision and comprehensive. That stack still may not include a BI limit you are comfortable with. Full coverage vs liability is the vocabulary page. This page is the injury-liability page.
A lender can force physical damage and still leave BI as your choice. Read the declarations. Do not assume the loan packet bought every liability line.
What we will not print here
We will not invent a recommended limit or a statute table. Limits belong on a file. Bring the cars, the drivers, and any current declarations. If you are switching, keep the old policy until the new one starts — How to switch.
If a court or an SR-22 is in the picture, say that first. Florida SR-22 is a filing, not a coverage name.
Questions drivers ask
Is bodily injury liability required in Florida?
Not to register a car. PIP and PDL are the floor. BI is still the coverage that may respond when you injure someone else. Ask to have it reviewed on the quote.
Is BI the same as PIP?
No. PIP is no-fault coverage for your household. BI is liability coverage for other people when you are at fault. You can have one without the other.
Does property damage liability include bodily injury?
No. PDL is about the other person’s car or property. BI is about injury to a person. Both can appear on one policy. They are different lines.
Should I add BI if I only carry the Florida minimum?
That is a household decision. A thinner quote is not automatically the right quote. Ask a provider to show the file with BI and without it.
Ready when you are
Request your Florida car insurance quote
Request a quote and ask for bodily injury liability to be reviewed. Florida can register the car without it. A claim still can find you.
Submitting information is a request for a quote, not an application for or guarantee of coverage.
