Full coverage vs liability in Florida

“Liability” and “full coverage” get used loosely. In Florida, the required pieces (PIP and PDL) are not the same as covering your own car.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

What people mean by liability

PDL is required for most registered cars. It may cover damage you cause to other people’s property. Bodily injury liability is separate and optional.

Florida sets a minimum for the required pieces. Read Florida PIP and PDL, explained in plain English if those names are new.

What people mean by full coverage

Usually collision and comprehensive on top of the required coverages. It is not a legal term. It is not a price.

Collision is for your car after a crash. Comprehensive is the other physical-damage side: theft, some weather, fire, vandalism, and hitting an animal, subject to the deductible.

PIP still does not fix the car

PIP is for injuries, not for the vehicle. If the car is damaged, that is a different coverage. The short explainer is on Florida PIP and PDL, explained in plain English.

When a lender forces the decision

If a bank or credit union is on the title, they are protecting the collateral. They will usually want collision and comprehensive. That is a contract rule, not a Florida statute.

If you just bought the car, start on Just bought a car in Florida? and tell the provider the lienholder name. The state floor alone is usually not enough for a financed car.

When drivers ask for more than Basic

People ask for more than Basic when the car is financed or leased, when they could not replace it tomorrow, or when they want higher limits reviewed. Availability depends on the carrier.

Higher liability often means asking about bodily injury and uninsured motorist. Those are not automatic with collision.

How to request both sides without mixing them

On the quote request, pick Standard or Premium if you want physical damage and higher liability reviewed. Pick Basic if you only want the registration floor. You can ask the provider to show both.

A cheaper Basic number is not a better full-coverage deal. Same cars, same ZIP, same deductibles — then look at the offer. See Florida car insurance rates if you want the rate-shape version of that warning.

Questions drivers ask

Does Florida require full coverage?

No. Florida requires PIP and property damage liability. Collision and comprehensive are extra unless a lender or lease contract says you must carry them.

Is full coverage the same as the highest liability limits?

Not automatically. People often bundle them, but you can have collision on your car and still carry only the required liability pair. Ask the provider to show both the physical-damage deductibles and the liability limits.

Should I add uninsured motorist to a full-coverage quote?

Many Florida drivers do, especially in dense metros, because covering your own car does not pay your injuries if the other driver has no insurance. Ask to have UM reviewed.

Can I see a full-coverage price without a quote request?

No honest public number exists for every household. Request a quote. This site does not publish a fake statewide full-coverage average.
