How to switch car insurance in Florida

Florida drivers lose this in one weekend: they cancel on Friday because a mailer looked cheaper, then find out Monday that the new carrier wants a missing driver. The old card is already dead.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

The only safe order

Do the quote request first. Confirm a start date with a provider you choose. Then cancel. If the new carrier cannot start tomorrow, keep the old policy until they can.

A cheaper number on a thinner stack is not a successful switch. Line up the same cars, drivers, and deductibles. Full coverage vs liability is how you keep those words honest.

What to send so the switch is apples to apples

If the current policy is the registration floor and you want more reviewed this time, say that. The field list is on What you need to request a Florida car insurance quote.

  • Current declarations page.
  • Year, make, and model — VIN if you have it — and lienholder names.
  • Every household driver, including the one who only drives on weekends.
  • The garaging address that is true now, not last year’s apartment.
  • Any tickets, claims, or a pending SR-22.

Mid-term vs renewal

You can switch before the renewal date. You may owe the old carrier through the cancel date. That is a reason to price the overlap, not a reason to sit in a policy you already decided to leave.

If a renewal letter is what started this, read Florida renewal went up. What to do next. Renewal week is still the easiest paperwork week because you already have a packet in your hand.

Special cases

If you just moved to Florida, the switch is really a rewrite into a new state. Use Just moved to Florida?. If you are adding a new car at the same time, start on Just bought a car in Florida?.

If the reason you are leaving is a DUI, a lapse, or a court filing, tell the provider on the first message. Read Florida DUI car insurance or Florida SR-22 first so you know what they will ask.

Questions drivers ask

When should I cancel my old Florida car insurance?

After the new policy can start and you have confirmed the date with a provider you choose. Canceling first is how people create a lapse.

Can I switch car insurance in the middle of my Florida term?

Yes. Ask for a start date you choose, then cancel the old one as of that date. You may still owe the old carrier through the overlap.

Will I lose continuous coverage if I switch?

Not if there is no gap. The risk is the weekend without a policy. Start the new one first so the dates touch.

Do I need the current declarations to switch?

You can start without them, but the request is cleaner with the current page. It shows cars, drivers, limits, and the lienholder the new carrier has to list.

Ready when you are

Request your Florida car insurance quote

Request the new quote first. Keep the policy you have until a provider you choose can actually replace it.

Submitting information is a request for a quote, not an application for or guarantee of coverage.
