New to Florida: the 10-day and 30-day checklist

Enter the day you became a Florida resident, started work here, or enrolled a child in a Florida public school. The dates below are 10 and 30 calendar days after that day.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

Documents

  • Proof of identity for every owner on the title.
  • Proof of Florida insurance. For a typical personal car that is PIP and property damage liability.
  • The original out-of-state title, when no lienholder is holding it.
  • Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration, Florida HSMV form 82040, signed by all owners.
  • A physical VIN inspection on HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042. FLHSMV lists law enforcement, military police, a licensed Florida dealer, or a tax collector or compliance examiner.
  • If a lienholder has the out-of-state title, ask them to send it to Florida. You still register the car. If they will not release it, bring that refusal in writing on their letterhead.
  • For the driver license, apply in person. Bring proof of your legal name, lawful presence, Social Security number, and two documents with your Florida residential address. Bring every name-change paper if your name changed. The status lists on the FLHSMV new-resident page say which set you need.

When the clocks start

FLHSMV, New Resident says you may be a Florida resident when you start work or a trade here, enroll your children in public school, register to vote, file for homestead, or live here more than six consecutive months. Checked October 24, 2026.

FLHSMV, Visiting Florida FAQs uses the same five tests and says you must get a Florida license within 30 days of becoming a resident.

If none of those are true, you have not started the resident clocks just by crossing the state line. Snowbirds and part-year residents is the page for a long visit that might cross six months.

Ten days: insurance and registration

FLHSMV, New Resident says you must get insurance from a Florida agent licensed to sell insurance in Florida so you can title and register your vehicles within 10 days of establishing residency.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Insurance Requirements says proof of PIP and property damage liability has to come from a company licensed to sell policies in Florida, or from an FLHSMV self-insurance certificate. For a typical four-wheel car that pair is at least $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage liability. The new-resident page and the insurance page do not use the same words for who sells the policy. Both are linked here. This site does not pick one and hide the other.

FLHSMV, Motor Vehicle Registrations says a vehicle with out-of-state plates must be registered within 10 days of the owner becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency.

The tool treats the date you enter as day zero and shows the calendar day 10 days later. FLHSMV’s phrase is “within 10 days.” Count it on a calendar before you rely on it for a tax-collector appointment.

Thirty days: the driver license

FLHSMV, New Resident says a new resident must get a valid Florida driver license within 30 days of establishing residency to drive on Florida roads. You apply in person. The tool shows the calendar day 30 days after the date you enter.

The same page lists government fees for a license. This page leaves those dollars off. Fees are not an insurance premium, and they are not a quote.

Documents to bring

The registration packet below is the no-lien list on FLHSMV, New Resident. A lien, a missing title, or a name that does not match can add paperwork. The license documents depend on the status list on that same page (U.S. citizen, immigrant, non-immigrant, or Canadian). FLHSMV, Visiting Florida FAQs is where the two proofs of residential address are spelled out.

What the quote request is for

Start the Florida quote request before you cancel the old policy. The ZIP is where the car sleeps now. Just moved to Florida? has the garaging note. What you need for a quote is the field list.

Questions drivers ask

How many days do I have after I become a Florida resident?

FLHSMV’s new-resident page says 10 days to title and register, and you need Florida insurance to do that, and 30 days to get a Florida driver license. The registration page also starts a 10-day plate clock when you become employed or place children in public school.

Which date should I enter?

Use the first day you established residency, started work in Florida, or enrolled a child in a Florida public school. If you only came for a short stay and none of the residency tests apply, the clocks have not started.

Can I keep my old state’s insurance?

Not once the car is being titled and registered in Florida. The new-resident page says you need Florida insurance to do that. Request the Florida quote before you cancel the old policy.

Does this checklist include a price?

No. The $10,000 figures are the PIP and property damage coverage limits on the FLHSMV insurance page. License and plate fees stay on the FLHSMV pages.

Enter your Florida ZIP. The form is tagged from this checklist so the follow-up knows you just moved.
