Snowbirds and part-year Florida car insurance

A winter in Florida is not automatically a Florida policy, and it is not automatically “still my other state’s car.” FLHSMV publishes the tests. The quote needs the ZIP where the car sleeps.

General information, not legal or insurance advice.

When a part-year stay becomes residency

FLHSMV, Visiting Florida FAQs says you must get a Florida driver license within 30 days of becoming a resident. It says you are a resident if you enroll your children in public school, register to vote, file for a homestead exemption, accept employment, or reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months. Checked October 24, 2026.

FLHSMV, New Resident uses those same ideas, and it adds engaging in a trade, profession, or occupation. Once you are a resident, that page gives you 30 days for the license and 10 days to title and register, which requires Florida insurance.

Arriving for a few weeks, with none of those tests met, does not start the 30-day license clock. The visiting page does not say the clock starts on the day you land.

The car, not just the person

FLHSMV, Motor Vehicle Registrations says a vehicle with out-of-state plates must be registered within 10 days of the owner becoming employed, placing children in public school, or establishing residency. If you have become a resident, the car that is here has a plate clock. Use the new-to-Florida checklist and enter that date.

Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Insurance Requirements says a vehicle with a current Florida registration must keep Florida PIP and property damage liability, at least $10,000 of each for a typical four-wheel vehicle. Those are coverage limits, not a price.

If the car sleeps in Florida for the season, that Florida ZIP belongs on the quote request. Hiding a Naples garage behind an out-of-state mailing address is how a file fails later. Just moved to Florida? says the same thing for a permanent move.

If the car stayed up north

This site takes Florida quote requests. If the car sleeps in another state and you flew down without it, say that. Do not ask for a Florida policy on a car that is not here.

There is no snowbird product on this page, and no carrier partnership. A provider can tell you what they can write for the car that is actually in Florida.

Six months is one test, not the only test

  • A job, a public-school enrollment, voter registration, or a homestead filing can make you a resident before six months.
  • More than six consecutive months can make you a resident even if you did none of those.
  • Leaving for a week does not, by itself, erase a stay. The visiting page’s phrase is more than six consecutive months. This page will not invent a day-count loophole.
  • Once a test is met, the license clock is 30 days and the title-and-register clock on the new-resident page is 10 days.

Questions drivers ask

I spend winters in Florida. Do I need a Florida license?

FLHSMV’s visiting FAQ says you need a Florida license within 30 days of becoming a resident. You are a resident if you enroll children in public school, register to vote, file homestead, accept employment, or reside here more than six consecutive months. A short stay that meets none of those does not start that clock.

My car stays in a Florida garage for the season. Which ZIP do I use?

Use the Florida ZIP where the car sleeps. If you have become a resident, the registration page gives out-of-state plates 10 days after employment, public school, or establishing residency.

Does six months mean I can ignore a job or a homestead filing?

No. Six consecutive months is one of the tests. Employment, public school, voter registration, and homestead are separate tests on the same FLHSMV pages.

Is there a snowbird policy on this site?

No. Request a Florida quote for a car that sleeps in Florida, or say the car is not here. We do not issue policies and we do not have a carrier partnership for seasonal drivers.

Request a quote with the ZIP where the car sleeps. If you are only visiting and the car is not in Florida, say that instead of forcing a Florida garage.
