Florida mature driver discount at 55
Florida law tells insurers to file a reduction for some drivers who are 55 or older and who finish an approved course. It does not say how many dollars. Ask on the quote. Do not assume it is already on the policy.

Who the statute is about
Florida Statutes section 627.0652 (2026) says rate filings for the liability, personal injury protection, and collision coverages of a motor vehicle policy must provide an appropriate reduction for those coverages when the principal operator of the covered vehicle is an insured 55 or older who has successfully completed a motor vehicle accident prevention course approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Checked October 24, 2026.
“Appropriate” is the statute’s word. Any discount an insurer uses is presumed appropriate unless credible data demonstrates otherwise. The section does not publish a percent or a dollar amount. This page will not invent one.
The reduction is for liability, PIP, and collision. The sentence does not name comprehensive. Do not add it.
The course has to be the approved one
FLHSMV approves the courses for this section. The statute tells the department to look at the people teaching it, whether the content can prevent crashes for people 55 or older, and whether the fee is reasonable. It also says the department sets the minimum hours, and an approved course requires a written test.
When you finish, the organization issues a certificate you can use to qualify. Bring that certificate into the quote conversation. We do not issue it and we do not apply the reduction. A provider does, if their filing includes it.
How long it lasts, and when it does not
- The reduction is effective for 3 years after you successfully complete the approved course.
- The insurer may require, as a condition of keeping it, that you not have an at-fault accident.
- The insurer may also require that you not be convicted of, or plead guilty or no contest to, a moving traffic violation.
- The section does not apply if you took the approved course as punishment from a court or another government entity after a moving violation.
How to ask without turning it into a promise
Say your age and that you have the certificate, if both are true. The rest of the discount guide is the other things people forget to mention. None of them is guaranteed on this site.
If you are comparing a renewal, bring the declarations page and read Florida renewal went up. A course certificate does not, by itself, explain a renewal change.
Questions drivers ask
Who can ask for the Florida mature driver reduction?
Section 627.0652 applies when the principal operator on the covered vehicle is 55 or older and has successfully completed a motor vehicle accident prevention course approved by FLHSMV.
How much is the discount?
The statute requires an appropriate reduction in the charges for liability, PIP, and collision. It does not state a percent or a dollar amount. This page will not invent one.
Does a course I took for a traffic ticket count?
Not if it was punishment from a court or another government entity after a moving violation. Section 627.0652 says the section does not apply in that case.
Does the reduction last forever?
No. The statute makes it effective for 3 years after you complete the course. The insurer may also condition keeping it on no at-fault accident and no moving-violation conviction or plea.
Request a quote and say if you are 55 or older and you have the FLHSMV-approved course certificate. We will not guess the dollar amount.
